Surrender

I used to be very possessive over my surfboards. In 2011, I attended a six month program in Chile through YWAM. My particular program was a Surf and Skate Discipleship Training School. During my time God taught me many things.

When I first arrived I felt like Jesus asked me to surrender my surfboards because I was holding on too tightly to them, giving them value above my relationship with God. The waves in Chile are constantly pumping, so I told God no, because I needed my surfboards to last six months in heavy surf. Over the course of the next two days, God allowed two of my boards to break, leaving me with one board to last six months. With much regret, I chose to relent in my heart, surrendering my prized possession to God.

Jesus taught me that He came to give us life to the full, but in order for us to receive what he has to offer, we must first let go of what we are holding so tightly. In this case, letting go didn’t mean getting rid of my board, it only meant placing it back in its rightful order below God. Not only did God bless my relationship with Him, he also miraculously preserved my surfboard for the rest of my trip. Im not kidding. After that day, my board was indestructible. I watched massive waves breaking on the middle of my board multiple times. At one point, I painfully watched eight Chilean children pile into the back of a truck, each one climbing across the bottom of my board one by one. No dings, no breaks. God gave me freedom from my enslavement to possessions then in His grace gave me my possessions back.

Matthew 13:44-46 says, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”

Jesus is the true treasure worth surrendering all you have that you are holding as more valuable than He. Do not let something or someone else take the throne in your life other than God, because trust me, whatever is sitting in that throne is your master.
